What are the easiest and hardest languages to learn?

The following information is published by the U.S. State Department, similar to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They publish all sorts of information about other countries and are responsible for embassies etc.

Looking at the data, we can see that the easiest languages for English speakers are those that share a common root with English-Nordic languages (such as German) and the Romance languages (derived from Latin).

Spanish appears among the easiest languages for English speakers because it has a Latin influence and we have many similar words, especially when writing or speaking formally, or using technical language. From this, conversely we can reasonably assume that learning or improving one’s English should also be relatively easy for Spanish people.

The English language has relatively simple grammar. However, the problematic area is speaking – especially if one has spent years reading studying without listening or talking to a real English speaker.
